Gear Change Patterns

7045 1980 Operators handbook shows the gear change pattern left to right as being:

The top row - Rev, 2nd, 4th
Bottom row - 1st, 3rd, 5th

Which is the pattern same as the 7245 1986 Operators handbook.

But I have seen two 1981 7045s with a different pattern.

The top row - Rev, 3rd, 4th
Bottom row - 1st, 2nd, 5th

Does anyone know what difference there is between the gearboxes, shift mechanisms and gearing. Will the parts book numbers cover both patterns.

Thanks Allan, that is a great help . I will look at the parts book a bit closer and see if I can identify the relevant bits and mark them accordingly.

Do you know if the same options hold also for 7245 or other models.

Alan, are you sure it isnt the other way around ?

Our 5245 has the inversed 3 and 4 and has a fast reverse (at least, same reverse speed as 3rd gear speed) compared to the 4712, 5718, 6718, 3011 and 2011 we had, or have. (same as 2nd gear speed)

For loading muck i would have liked the slow reverse, because you either slip the clutch or lift the rear when breaking out my new muck claw from the pile.

i have also seen the gearbox with 2 and 3 gear have switched place here in norway.... dont know about this fast reverse.

Has anyone had experience in changing over from one pattern to the other. Is the the difference only in the change mechanism set up with the selectors or is it done in the gear box clusters.

If it is the latter then it looks like the standard pattern (H) set up would need a change or two with:

The 2nd /3rd sliding gear reversed on the spine
The 4th/3rd gear on the layshaft shaft be replaced with a 4th/2nd combination
The 1st/2nd gear on the layshaft be replaced with a 1st/3rd gear combination.

That is all guess work looking at the parts book.

In the parts book it shows the layshaft gear for 2nd/3rd as one part number so I presume it is a solid part rather than two cogs pressed and keyed onto a sleeve.
Ditto 1st/2nd cluster.

Am I barking up the wrong tree.

Both the 2 / 1982 and 3 / 1984 parts book seem to shown part numbers for the standard Pattern H change.
Rev 2nd 4th
1st 3rd 5th
as far as I can guess form the relative cog sizes.

If all this is so then no part numbers are listed for a solid 4th/2nd and 1st/3rd layshaft clusters.

Can anyone please shed light on any part of this guess work.

I really appreciate the info to date as tearing down a gearbox is probably not day to day stuff for most.

From my memory, the small shaft which makes the reverse gear, runs on the one but rearmost gear. You will have to change that little shaft and strip the entire gearbox, divide it from the rear axle and from the clutch off. Strip the PTO gears out in the front, hi/low range in the rear with home made special extraction tools. (i couldnt buy these part numbers)

I am afraid it involves changeing several combination gears (yes they are solid) but who knows, maybe they had the idler shaft for reverse, in a different position on the shaft...

Thank You Renze for your detailed and helpful description. I will leave looking at a change over until a spare box becomes available. Meanwhile current operation is fine with the existing ratios. I intend to do some drainage work ahead where dragging back with the bucket will be better done with a lower reverse.
