A friend who has a John Deere 2000 series Zetor (an 8540 I think) has stripped a major drive gear in the transmission. Is this a known fault or a one off failure?

Never heard of that. Only the 4th gear of a 3011 and 4712 sometimes broke a teeth, when the shift fork fell inbetween the gears due to 30 years of rough operators.

those tractors were basically a 7245 zetor (depending o the model) which had no transmission issues that i have heard of

2700 and 2800 were the 8540 and 9540.

oh sorry, i was thinking of the 2300-2400 like these:

It was a 2700. It had 6000 hours on it and was using a mulcher. It stripped the main input shaft in the gearbox. The replacement part from John Deere cost $600. I suspect it would have been cheaper from Zetor .

I never ordered shafts but i bet its a lot cheaper at Zetor .
